Putting on Christ Series 12/7/11

12/7/11
38Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
41And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Matthew 5:38-42

King James Version (KJV)

Putting on Christ & walking in the Spirit requires us to turn the other cheek, to give, to do good instead of wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right. "When we are wronged, often our first reaction is to get even. Instead Jesus said, we should do good to those who wrong us: our desire should not be to keep score, but to love & forgive. This is not natural-it is supernatural. Only God can give us the strength to love as He does. Instead of planning vengeance, pray for those who hurt you," KJV Life Application Study Bible. Exodus 21:24, Leviticus 24:20, Deuteronomy 19:21 all about the eye for an eye. The punishment had to fit the crime. However, Jesus has commanded us to turn the other cheek. Jesus turned the other cheek when He was crucified. He even prayed for them. Romans 12:17 lets us know not to repay evil for evil & to do what is right. 1 Peter 3:9 "Not rendering(repaying) evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing." When people spit at us, hate us, persecute us, we need to love them. We need to turn our cheek & pray for for them just like Jesus :)
